About Sućuraj

Sućuraj is a small town situated at the eastern cape of the island of Hvar. The island of Hvar belongs to the group of Central Dalmatian islands, Hvar being the sunniest and the longest Croatian island.  Sućuraj has 350 year-round inhabitants who make their living from fishing and tourism. Due to extremely pleasant climate and beautiful nature Sućuraj is an appealing tourist destination.  Sućuraj is well-known for the considerable number of fishing boats owned by the local fishermen, and also for the production of quality wines and olive oil. In Sućuraj there is a post office, two cash-machines, a physician and a heliport for emergency medical interventions, a branch harbour office, a primary school, a church, etc. There are also a few restaurants. coffee bars and shops.  The island of Hvar is famous for its mild Mediterranean climate and numerous sunny days. Sućuraj is one of the sunniest and warmest places on the island and owing to this sunbathing and swimming are possible from early June till the end of September. Summers in Sućuraj are extremely long, dry, and warm. However, a local summer breeze ("maestral") refreshes and makes Your holiday in Sućuraj even pleasanter. Winters are short and mild, and low temperatures are very rare. Even a greater rarity is the snow, which nevertheless does fall approximately once in 20 years. Thanks to such a pleasant climate, the town and the area surrounding it are lush with typically Mediterranean vegetation.

 

The history of Sućuraj started more than 2300 years ago. Throughout its history Sućuraj had been devastated and rebuilt several times. The first known inhabitants of Sućuraj were the Illyrians. In the 7th and 8th century A.D. the Croats settled in these lands and remained here to the present day.

During the course of history, many authorities and rulers have followed each other in the Dalmatian region and in Sućuraj as its inseparable part: the Romans, the Venetians, the French, the Austrians, the Italians, etc.

A few historical sites have been preserved to this day. You can visit an old Franciscan friary and a baroque church of St. Anthony, built in the 17th century. The Venetian fortress, the so-called "Fortica", was also built in the 17th century but unfortunately has been only partially preserved.

Sućuraj is an interesting and colourful town rich in history and really worth visiting.
